A Community Fund Project Supported by the National Lottery
Introduction
South Asian women have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many have faced significant challenges, including bereavement, loss of livelihood providers, heightened isolation, and in some cases, suicidal tendencies. Despite these difficulties, a large number of women have not accessed support services.
Project Aim
The Pathways Without Cobbles programme is a 24-month initiative designed specifically for South Asian women who are not currently in formal employment. The primary aim is to provide psychosocial support, foster emotional empowerment, and create pathways towards employment and wider social integration.
Key Challenges Addressed
Language barriers limiting access to services and opportunities.
Cultural isolation prevents integration and confidence-building.
Psychological impacts of grief, trauma, and adversity caused by the pandemic.
Programme Approach
The project will adopt a holistic and culturally sensitive approach by:
Offering psychosocial support within a safe, respectful, and welcoming space.
Delivering tailored workshops focusing on emotional wellbeing,
cultural understanding, and practical life skills.
Recognising cultural nuances to encourage confidence and self-expression.
Promoting empowerment through open discussions and mutual peer support.
Expected Outcomes
Through participation in the programme, women will:
Gain confidence, resilience, and motivation.
Take initial steps towards formal employment or training opportunities.
Develop social confidence and articulate personal aspirations.
Build pathways for long-term personal growth and community integration.
Sustainability
The project is designed to have a lasting impact by:
Establishing a supportive peer network that continues beyond the
programme’s lifetime.
Building upon extensive research and consultation with South Asian
women and local community organisations.
